Sass & Bide: The Circus Ball

08 Oct 2018

Sass & Bide’s Resort 18 collection is all about a good and unashamedly glam time.

Fuelled by the spirit of celebration, decadence, and a sense of occasion, Sass & Bide’s designers found inspiration in the lavish parties hosted by 19th Century American style icon and interior designer Elsie de Wolfe. Revered as the first female interior designer and the best-dressed woman in the world-Elsie’s famed Circus Ball took place at her opulent villa in Versailles each July and was a truly elegant all-nighter; a spectacle of high-society glamour, theatre, abandon, and excess. And unapologetically so; “Never complain, never explain,” was her life-long motto.

Resort 18 encapsulates the very promise of the party season; revelry, glamour, razzle and dazzle. These are pieces that make an entrance and command attention. Bold, standout prints in chevron, jacquard, leopard and zebra hold court while the brand’s signature monochrome moment plays out in an array of stripes, an abstracted star motif, pretty panelling reminiscent of Art Deco tiling, and a zebra-print effect in finely layered sequins dance across a fun and fabulous party dress, tuxedo jacket, and shorts.

Yet there are quieter moments here too; silhouettes skim the body, heroing the waist in evening jackets, bustiers, high-waisted pants, shorts, and skirts. Soft, feminine accents continue with delicate ruffles, pretty pleating, elongated, blouson sleeves, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses.

The Resort 18 colour palette is the perfect balance of warm and cool, hard and soft. Pops of red, magenta, high-shine metallics in gold and silver....circus-red stripes sit against the softness of ivory and lilac, and the undeniably elegant monochrome.

Decorative detail adds depth in the form of silk-stitched embroidery, star-studded embellishment, fabulous fringing, and a sea of sequins. As in life, it’s all about the mix.
