Regardless of how close a family might be, working together isn’t always going to be smooth sailing. Balancing the personal and professional is hardly easy, but for family behind Lawrence Dry Cleaners at Chatswood Chase, running the company together is what makes it so rewarding.

“On a particularly stressful work day, having family around lifts the weight off your shoulders,” says Zarina Mangal, daughter of Anwar Mangal, Lawrence Dry Cleaner’s managing director. “That’s not to say it’s always easy! Being around those closest to you 24/7 comes with challenges, but the benefits definitely outweigh them.”

Having been a part of Chatswood Chase since the centre’s beginning, Lawrence Dry Cleaners is basically part of the furniture.

“Our shop has been relocated each time the centre has been renovated,” Zarina says. Having just moved into its new home on the centre’s Lower Ground, the relocation marks another milestone for the family business. “The new Lawrence Dry Cleaners store at Chatswood Chase is beautifully designed with a clean and sleek look. You can see the quality and workmanship shine through in the store — an overall great reflection of our company.”

The longevity of Lawrence Dry Cleaners at Chatswood Chase is unsurprising — the Mangal family are unwaveringly committed to providing their customers with the best service possible — but the business’ success is made even more inspiring when you hear Anwar’s backstory.

“My dad Anwar was born in Afghanistan, grew up with 10 siblings and graduated from law and political science at Kabul University,” explains Zarina. “As he began his

career in politics, he was forced to flee in 1986 at the age of 21 due to the Soviet invasion.

He arrived in Australia alone, speaking no English with not a cent in his pocket. His degree and experience were not valid in Australia, so he became a cleaner.”

Starting as a presser in the back of a dry cleaning shop, Anwar’s determination and dedication saw him climb the ranks at Lawrence Dry Cleaners. Today, he’s the company’s managing director, working with his daughters Zarina and Raihana who help run the business and manage 21 locations around New South Wales.

“When it comes to working with my family, I love all the little things,” Zarina reflects. “The commute to and from work each day with my family, having my desk next to my dad’s and opposite my sister’s, taking lunch breaks together, catching eye contact during meetings, the list goes on!”

Lawrence Dry Cleaners’s success is a testament to the Mangal family’s passion and commitment to their customers — it’s no wonder they’ve remained a fixture of Chatswood Chase for so long.
